The musical follows a dance-loving teenager, Tracy Turnbland in the 1960s in the city of Baltimore. She auditions for a spot on “The Corny Collins Show” and wins. But before all of that happens, she goes through some rough patches because she wants the show to be accessible to black dancers as well at a time when they needed to be separated.
She became an overnight celebrity, a pioneer in dance, entertainment and fashion. Perhaps her newfound status as a teenage sensation is enough to topple Corny’s reigning dance queen and bring racial integration to the show.
