Australia Day: Hollywood stars who made their Home and Away debut

Australia Day has arrived and Australians around the world are celebrating the best of Down Under today, from the stunning beaches to Vegemite.

he country has also produced its fair share of famous faces, and they all started in the same place: at home and away.

Many have come and gone from Summer Bay over the years, but these are some of those who have made it to Hollywood.

Hollywood star Hemsworth is best known for playing hammer-wielding superhero Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, but the Melbourne native got his start in Summer Bay.

He starred as college student Kim Hyde on Home and Away from 2004 to 2007, stealing the hearts of soap lovers everywhere when he got caught up in paternity confusion with his ex-girlfriend Brooke McPherson.

Kim then married Doctor Rachel Armstrong but left his wife and Summer Bay for good to be with another woman, Kit Hunter, after she became pregnant with his child.

Naomi Watts

A decade before landing her breakthrough role as Betty Elms in Mulholland Drive, Naomi Watts played Julie Gibson in Home and Away.

Super fans of the series will remember that Julie, who appeared in a few episodes between April and May 1991, used a wheelchair after surviving a car accident that killed her mother.

Watts has since earned two Oscar nominations and won a Screen Actors Guild award for starring in Birdman.

Before becoming a household name for his Oscar-winning role as the Joker in The Dark Knight and appearing in hits such as 10 Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger spent home and outside as Scott Irwin.

Although he only appeared in a handful of episodes, the actor is fondly remembered for playing the local bad boy, who was expelled from school for breaking into the office of the director and stole exam papers.

Ledger died on January 22, 2008 after an accidental overdose of a combination drug.

Arrested Development actress Isla Fisher joined the cast of Home and Away in 1994 when she was just 19 years old.

The 45-year-old star starred as Shannon Reed in nearly 400 episodes over three years.

Her character arrived at the bay with her brother Curtis and wreaked havoc when it was revealed that they were in fact dating and had only adopted siblings.

Fisher left performing in 1997 to move to Paris, where she attended acting and art school, and has since appeared in films such as The Great Gatsby, Confessions of a Shopaholic and Now You See Me.

Samara weaving

Adelaide-born Samara acted as gym owner Indi Walker on Home and Away from 2009 to 2013, leaving the bay shortly after finding out her husband Romeo had died of cancer.

The 29-year-old has been busy ever since, making a name for herself by striking deals with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Some of her recent roles include Bee in Netflix’s The Babysitter film series, Claire Wood in the Hollywood miniseries, and Jessica Chandler in Nine Perfect Strangers.
