Who will ever forget the ash-faced Meryl Streep, wrapped in a black shawl, as she turned to watch us in the brooding period Hollywood film The French Lieutenant’s Wife, written by local author John Fowles?

It was filmed at the end of The Cobb at Lyme Regis, the exact spot where now the prequel to the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory simply called Wonka is to be partially shot.
The locals were very excited to hear that the last American star Timothee Chalamet was in town.
He is the latest crush to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at just 22 years old in the film Call Me by Your Name.

There was great excitement in the city when Chalamet was seen singing and dancing on the famous pier – the new movie will be a musical like the original.
Yesterday (Monday October 11), Chalamet posted on his Instagram account the shoot at Lyme Regis and more than 4 million people liked it, mostly women.
He said on his post: “The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last.”
Wonka’s new film will also star Oscar-winning actor Olivia Coleman and Rowan Atkinson, along with many other famous actors.
The area near the harbor has been covered in fake snow for the scene which will also show boats from the era only and the entire section of the harbor has been designed to resemble that of the 1930s.
Old-fashioned cars and a boat called Lydia Eva were spotted by locals where all the action was taking place.
The film, which will be released in 2023, will star Chalamet as the young chocolatier as part of the famous Roald Dahl story.

The city is teeming with cast and crew this week, locals say it’s bigger than the Ammonite movie about famous fossil collector Mary Anning starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan.
Chalamet is the third actor to play Wonka, Gene Wilder was the first in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 1971, and Johnny Depp starred in the 2005 version of Roald Dahl’s story.
Lyme Regis, who rarely sees snow, will look stunning in the new movie. It is such a picturesque port with the famous old buildings and locals will be delighted to see the finished movie.
Filming is believed to take place all day today, Tuesday, October 13.
A release date has yet to be announced by Warner Bros.
