Dakota johnson and Henri golding heat screens in the first preview of their upcoming Netflix adaptation of Persuasion.

The film takes a more modern take on the Jane Austen classic, though both actors appear in period costumes in the new footage. released by Netflix Wednesday.

Johnson, 31, plays Austen’s heroine Anne Elliot, who is confronted with her past when she crosses paths with her lost love, Captain Frederick Wentworth.

Cosmo Jarvis plays Wentworth in the first look released by Netflix, while Golding plays Anne’s cousin and potential suitor, Mr. Elliot.

Acclaimed theater director Carrie Cracknell makes her directorial debut with the film, after directing Jake Gyllenhall and Tom Sturridge on Broadway in Sea wall / A life.

Persuasion was the last fully completed novel by Austen and it was published six months after his death in 1817.

Many adaptations of the novel have been published, including the most recent of 2019 Rational creatures, a modernization of history.

In 2007 Oscar nominees Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones played Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth in the UK television film ITV Persuasion.

Persuasion debuts on Netflix in 2022.
