LONDON: Fans rejoiced over a ‘Game of Thrones’ themed advert that went viral on social media on Friday, promoting the launch of Riyadh Season 2022, an entertainment festival in Riyadh.

The ad, a remake of some scenes from the popular HBO hit show, got mostly positive reactions from people on social media.

Saudi royal court adviser Turki Alalshikh stars as the Night King, alongside a cast of other talented Saudi actors and actresses.

“I want to thank everyone involved in this #Riyadh_Season commercial. You have been creative. Young Saudi men and women are incredibly creative and have so much potential,” Alalshikh said in a tweet, “and to our inspirational leader and patron of the vision, with your ambition and dreams, the sky is the limit.

Saudi filmmaker Mohammed Almulla directed the Riyadh Season 2022 commercial and won acclaim for his creative work which reached over 3.8 million views.

Twitter user Majed said: “As usual Almulla is creative in his directing.”

Fadila Al-Jaffa, a Saudi international and national affairs commentator, tweeted: “What we couldn’t even imagine in a daydream is a reality in the country’s modern version, a Saudi religious notable leads the cast in a promo movie for Riyadh entertainment season!

Another Twitter user expressed his admiration, saying, “(I) am really impressed. It’s really unbelievable !”

Despite the rave reviews, however, other people found the ad “cringe-worthy” and criticized the director for its perceived lack of originality.

Twitter user Yaz said: “Surely it’s illegal? Unless he got the rights from HBO to imitate GOT. He’s not allowed to post anything resembling the ‘episode.
