Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic looks of recent times: Zendaya in Valentino Couture at the Oscars this year and in the bodycon lamé evening dress in Malcolm & Marie, Anya Taylor-Joy in Custom Dior at the 2021 Golden Globes and Céline Dion in… well anything. What do they have in common? Law Roach, the man behind those looks. You might recognize him on Instagram, where he goes by the nickname @luxurylaw.
But Roach isn’t just another celebrity stylist. He prefers you to call him by his title of “architect of the image.” A fair request, given that it has staged some of the biggest fashion transformations in recent times. Zendaya’s transition from Disney Princess to Undisputed Red Carpet Queen and Dion’s powerful sartorial resurrection around 2016 are just a few examples. Over the years he has worked with everyone from Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey to Kerry Washington, Hunter Schafer and Tiffany Haddish. More recently, he added his magical touch to the powerful sensibility of Priyanka Chopra. Safe to say that the true fashion force that is Roach, has all the makings of an industry legend. Just yesterday hollywood reporter named him ‘Stylist of the Year’, and he’s even on the cover of the issue alongside muses Zendaya and Taylor-Joy.
So what goes into making a style icon? How important is a moment on the red carpet? How can fashion influence change, and what is its secret ingredient? We asked Roach himself on a transatlantic phone call. Spoiler alert: He attributes his success to “the passion and love for his job,” which we can confirm radiate even when he speaks to us early at 8am on a Monday morning.
The power of fashion
It’s a well-established fact that fashion plays a key role in defining a celebrity’s influence and power. Roach’s Daughters, without a shadow of a doubt, are some of the most dominant names in the business today. They rule the red carpets and the streets with the same flair. What goes into making such defining looks? “I might be lucky,” he laughs. “Honestly, it’s not just about the clothes. Its a question of confidence. You can have the most amazing dress, but if the woman wearing it isn’t feeling their best, it won’t have any impact. It is therefore important that I listen to my clients and get to know them. It can’t be just what I think they should be wearing. It must be a very authentic and organic collaboration. That’s when he shines on the red carpet.
