Almost every action movie involves a high octane car chase involving precision driving and featuring “see and believe” stunts. The reality is that many of these driving stunts are done by professionals, with the actors usually being on the back door when it comes to doing the high speed driving scenes to ensure their health and safety.

Actors tend to have a large collection of vehicles, but this is usually where they stop. However, some actors carry their passion for cars into their personal lives to soak up the thrill of it all with no cameras or scripts involved.

Jay Leno has one of the largest collections of cars and bicycles, with over 200 examples on display. Others like Jerry Seinfeld and Floyd Mayweather are not far behind.

Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie, and Jason Statham are just a few of the actors and actresses known to do their stunts, even if that means bruising themselves in the process.

Below are some of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors who have also plied their trade behind the wheel of a racing car:

1. Matt LeBlanc

Most people know him for his role as Joey on the 1994 Friends TV series, but when it comes to cars, he was one of the top gear hosts.

He started riding motorcycles at the age of 8 and to this day holds the record for the fastest lap on the Top Gear track. Who said ‘Joey’ was just a pretty face.

2. Gene Hackman

The ‘uh what? ‘ on this list is an actor who has been in Hollywood for what seems like an eternity. Yes, age may have caught up with him, but Gene Hackman was once a runner.

The now 90-year-old actor raced in Formula Ford in the 1970s and competed in the Daytona 24 Hours in 1983.

3. Paul Walker

The late actor, best known for his role as Brian O’Connor in the Fast and Furious movie franchise, was also a huge bastard when not doing his on-screen thing.

Walker competed in the Redline Time Attack Race Series, where he drove a Street Tire Class BMW E92 M3 for the AE Performance Motorsport team. He also drove a Ford Boss Mustang in the Pirelli World Challenge Series.

4. Eric Bana

He previously played The Hulk in the 2003 film, but aside from having mad green monster blood running through his veins, he’s also an oil fanatic at heart.

The Australian actor has taken part in numerous races such as the 12 Hours of Bathhurst, the Australian GT Championship and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge. He ran 38 times in total with two podiums.

5. Patrick Dempsey

The most established slash racer actor on the list comes in the form of “McDreamy” from the popular television series Grey’s Anatomy. His crowning achievement is to finish second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 5 years ago, with his Dempsey-Proton team.

He has also taken part in prestigious races such as the Rolex Sports Car Series, the Porsche Supercup and the World Endurance Championship. Not bad for a “doctor”.
