Kiwi filmmaker Cliff Curtis has reunited with The Piano co-star Anna Paquin in a new Netflix movie, True Spirit.

Spy understands that filming is underway in Queensland for the film about Australian teenager Jessica Watson, who became the youngest person to sail nonstop solo around the world when she was just 16.

Young Australian star Teagan Croft plays Watson, Paquin, his mother, Julie, and Curtis, Croft’s coach Ben Bryant.

It’s been 27 years since The Piano, which won an Oscar for Paquin when she was 14.

Since then, she and Curtis, 53, have had successful careers. Paquin starred with fellow The Piano alumnus Harvey Keitel two years ago in Martin Scorsese’s mob movie The Irishman.

The actress recently celebrated her 11th birthday with her True Blood co-star and husband Stephen Moyer and has just finished filming the American NFL movie American Underdog starring Dennis Quaid.

Curtis will be on movie screens pretty much non-stop for the next several years. His recently released sci-fi thriller Reminiscence sees him playing the villainous role of Hugh Jackman.

Meanwhile, the first of its Avatar sequels is slated for release at the end of next year. Filming is complete on the second and third installments directed by James Cameron, with four and five yet to be shot in Wellington.

Curtis plays Tonowari in all four sequels, which will be released in two-year installments.
