The Buckinghamshire village that starred in Hollywood films including Johnny Depp’s Sleepy Hollow

The skeletal remains of 97 newborn babies have been discovered here, in what would have been a former Roman brothel

Buckinghamshire is often visited by film crews due to its scenic locations. However, there is one village in particular, a short drive from Marlow, which is so popular with filmmakers that it has appeared in several Hollywood films.

Hambleden is a time capsule of a village that has attracted the likes of Tim Burton, who chose it as the backdrop for his film sleepy hollow. Production crews spent an entire month filming in the Quiet Village with stars Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.

In addition to being magnificent, the village is steeped in history. Hambleden was once home to Yewden Villa, a Roman building said to have been used as a military brothel. In 1912, archaeologists unearthed the skeletal remains of 97 newborn babies at the site.

The bones were rediscovered wrapped in cigarette cases at a Chiltern Archeology reserve in 2008, sparking a dispute over their cause of death. In 2010, a scientist suggested that the old villa may have been a brothel and that those who lived and worked inside had committed infanticide over a 50-year period. Others argued that it was home to a cult that performed terrifying and bloody surgeries on babies.

Hambleden also made an appearance in the Domesday Book of 1086. Hambleden was also used as a base for American soldiers during the build-up to D-Day in 1944.

Since the filming of sleeping hollow, the village has seen countless television and film producers return. In recent months Grays Anatomy stars Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams have been spotted in Hambleden filming Disney’s Nice to meet you after.

Other notable screen pieces that have been filmed in the village are Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, In the woods and The return of Nanny McPhee. He has also appeared in television series such as Agatha Christie’s Poirotand the Amazon miniseries good omens with David Tennant.
