Yorkshire Marvel, Netflix and the Hollywood actors you might not know are from County God’s Own

Yorkshire is known for producing some of the best musicians the industry has to offer, from the Arctic Monkeys and The Human League to Pulp and Soft Cell.

But what about Yorkshire film stars? Probably starting out in local theater groups near you in Leeds, Sheffield or Huddersfield, they are now rubbing shoulders with stars in the Hollywood Hills.

Either they were born and raised here, or they moved and grew up here. Either way, they got down to business and got their well-deserved success and became household names.

Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson recently shocked diners in Yorkshire where he is filming a series believed to be marvel’s “Secret Invasion”. Sure, Samuel L. Jackson isn’t from God’s Country, but the actors below are.

Christina Pickles

Known for her role as Judy Geller in Friends between 1994 and 2003, Christina Pickles was born in West Yorkshire and at fifteen was already enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She moved to New York shortly after graduating. She landed the role of nurse Helen Rosenthal in the NBC medical drama St Elsewhere in 1982.

For her role as mother to Monica and Ross Geller, she received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 1995. A year later, she starred in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet.

Elizabeth Henstridge

Elizabeth Henstridge is an actress from Sheffield and best known for her role as Agent Jemma Simmons in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD between 2013 and 2020. She attended Sheffield’s Meadowhead School and King Edward VII School as a child and later graduated from the University of Birmingham before making the move across the pond to Los Angeles.

In March 2020, she landed the lead role in the Apple TV+ drama thriller series Suspicion where she would star alongside Hollywood icon Uma Thurman.

Matthew Lewis

Hollywood’s own Neville Longbottom hails from Yorkshire with his family coming from Horsforth to Leeds. Apart from playing a huge role at Hogwarts for ten years, he also starred in the 2016 romantic drama ‘ Me before you which is currently on Netflix and became a box office hit.

Sean Bean

The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones icon has never lost his Yorkshire accent despite attending one of the UK’s most prestigious acting schools. Hailing from Handsworth in Sheffield, he has starred in Hollywood favorites for decades. Also starring in Troy and GoldenEye, he is one of the most famous people to come from Yorkshire.

Eleanor Tomlinson

Not only did she star in the British historical drama TV series Poldark, but she also starred in Hollywood’s Alice in Wonderland alongside actors like Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Johnny Depp. Although she was born in London, her family moved to Beverley in Yorkshire, where she grew up.

Mr. Patrick Stuart

The X-Men star hails from Mirfield in Kirklees. The Yorkshire man has been nominated for a Golden Globe, Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and Saturn Awards throughout his six-decade long career. He has also performed in theater and television. Also known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994 and its associated films.

Jodie Whittaker

Most recently known for portraying the thirteenth incarnation of The Doctor in the BBC Doctor Who series, she also starred in Black Mirror on Netflix. His episode, titled ‘The Whole Story of You’, also featured fellow Yorkshire actor Toby Kebbell.

She was born in Skelmanthorpe in Yorkshire and attended Scissett Middle School and Shelley High School before training at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduating in 2005.

Lady Judi Dench

Actress Dame Judi Dench is from York and has a huge career in Hollywood, including being part of the James Bond franchise playing ‘M’ in seven of the films over 17, from Goldeneye in 1995 to Skyfall in 2012 She also made an appearance in Spectre. in 2015.

She is often considered one of the best actresses in British history. She had regular contact with theatrical life as a child through her parents. His father was a doctor who was also a general practitioner for the York Theater Royal and his mother was his wardrobe mistress. There were often actors in the Dench household.

Ben Kingley

The Oscar and Grammy award-winning actor hails from Snainton in North Yorkshire. He has a long career with a number of Hollywood hits under his belt like Schindler’s List, Shutter Island where he starred alongside Leonardo Dicaprio and Iron Man 3.

He has won an impressive number of awards, including an Academy Award (out of four nominations), a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Grammy Award.
